Retreat:Themes
![]() Creative themes don't make or break a Ladies Retreat or Ladies Day, but they sure can make it more fun!
Combining fun creative themes with a strong spiritual theme can create a wonderful, memorable experience for the sisters in Christ you are serving. If you are really lucky, your speaker will jump on board and you use your creative theme to help cement the ideas that she brings with her. Using the central speaking theme or an illustration from her lessons, you can add to the theme with decor, activities, and advertising. Here are some fun themes I, along with a great team of awesome servers, have been part of planning. Immeasureably MoreOur spiritual theme was about our overflowing blessings, and so naturally our decorations were all about tea parties. We decorated the tables with tea cups, tea pots, candles and pretty things. We did activities that had to do with overflowing blessings and other 'overflowing' things (like a building a human water fountain). Our name tags were different colored tea pots, which we used to help break everyone up into discussion groups.
Clothed with ChristWe talked about being clothed with Christ, and cemented in our minds by doing lots of dress-up! We decorated with shoes and accessories. We did "makeovers" and gave out Hat Awards. It's a fun theme for us girls!
Daughter of the KingSpiritually we took hold of our title as daughters of our King, creatively we decorated with lots of pink, pearls and sparkles. We played Princess Scavenger Hunt and had a brunch table fit for a queen. Since there are about a million things out there for princess themed parties and such, this one was easy!
Holiness SchoolOne of my favorites, this was a school theme. We decorated with kid stuff (crayons, marbles, straws, blocks, candy, etc), colored our tables with markers, decorated lunch bags, played musical chairs, and handed out Yearbook Awards. Our agenda was typed on "notebook paper" and everything on it was school-related. Oh, and we found the cutest little mini-composition notebooks for taking notes! We had lots of fun being kids together, and learned how to be holy in the process.

We also used ladies from our own congregation to share their "life lessons". We named their sessions Uno (making God number one), Connect Four (integrating God in family), Sorry! (learning to forgive), Jenga (learning to find balance) and Chutes and Ladders (riding out life's ups and downs). Our notecards and discussion questions were printed on "playing cards". So fun!

Everything You NeedUsing my own message and series of lessons based on 2 Peter 1:3, I have seen groups do amazing things creatively with this spiritual theme. Using a construction/tool theme the ladies learn about their tools and who to build their good work. Others have done "everything you need for ..." themed doorprizes, and activities. For instance one group did a basket with "everything you need for a night in", or "everything you need for a bubble bath" ..so cute!
